    Instructional Objectives:

    Students will be able to:

    1. Understand formatting and source documentation in humanities.
    2. Recognize the basics of MLA (S3) and APA (S4) documentation styles.
    3. Explore how MLA regulates language, document format, in-text citation, and references in academic writing.
    4. Compare MLA Style 8 ed. and APA style 7 ed.
    5. Use the basics of each style of formatting as they write an essay. 

    Description of the Course: 

    This course is meant to guide students to improve their academic writing by learning to use the art of formatting effectively. It encourages students to overcome the offence of plagiarism by acquiring how to build their academic self via using MLA style as they quote or paraphrase sources either within their texts or when dealing with reference entries. 

    Target Group (s):

    Second Year Students, LMD

    Speciality: English 

    Course Prerequisites:

    =) Paraphrasing, quoting, summarizing, and writing coherent paragraphs.

    =) Self, time and task management skills.

    Lesson 01: An introduction to MLA style 8 edition

    Session Duration: 90 minutes
    Evaluation: 

    At the end of the instruction unit, students are expected to answer questions related to the theoretical background of formatting and do tasks related to practice.  50% of the grading score pertains to tutorial tests, homework, tasks and presentations (continuous evaluation). On the other hand, 50% of the evaluation relies on the final exam.  








  • Lecture 01: An Introduction to MLA Style

                                                                                                                    

    Course 01Lesson Description:
    The first lecture introduces second-year students to the Modern Language Association format. Its use is common when citing references in the field of humanities. In our case, students rely on it as they write research papers in the field of civilization and literature. 

    Learning Objectives:
    The main objectives of this lecture are as follows:
    1- Students will be familiar with the logic of the 8th edition of MLA. 
    2- Students will also recognize the nine features of MLA when citing references and make the difference between the academic container and the digital container.

  • Lecture 02: Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty


    Course 02: Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty

    Lesson Description:

    The second lecture is entitled: Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty. It aims at raising awareness about the negative impact of plagiarism on academic integrity and the performance of students. The lecture accentuates the importance of using the tools of citation and formatting in order to set the seeds of academic authorship. 

    Learning Objectives:

    The main objectives of this lecture are as follows:

    - Students will recognize the negative impact of plagiarism on their academic progress

    - Students will identify the importance of relying on MLA and APA formats in order to overcome the burden of academic dishonesty. 

  • Lecture 03: Document Format and the Works Cited List

    Lesson Description: 

    The third lecture aims at introducing second-year students to the document format and the convention of Works Cited Entry (References in other words). The lecture reinforces the process of works citation by providing different examples and activities about Works Cited Entry.

    Learning Objectives:

    1-Second-year students will be able to use document format correctly according to MLA when writing an academic paper.

    2- Second-year students will be able to format references correctly according to the rubric of Works cited entries.



  • Lecture 04: In-text Citation in MLA Style

    Lesson Description:

     Lecture four aims at introducing in-text citation with its codes and conventional format in MLA style so that the student will be able to use it easily. The lecture also provides three guiding activities (Activities 4, 5, and 6) to build up the skill of formatting in humanities.

    Learning Objective:

    - Second-year students will be able to use in-text citations effectively during their research or academic writing. 


  • Lecture 5: Building the academic self: authorship and independent learning

    Lesson Description:

    This lecture is marked as the fruit of the third semester. It inspires students to become independent learners and confident academic writers as it introduces them to tips that may help them achieve this aim.  

    Our Slogan is: don't panic. It is just reading, thinking, writing and documenting. 


    Lesson Objectives:

    By the end of this course, students will be:

    1-    Motivated to write and use the insights of MLA style when writing presentation reviews

    2-    Confident to start applying the acquired tips introduced by Davis when writing and documenting sources.
