Course Presentation:
The ESP module for 3rd-year Licence students
is designed to introduce the key principles, history, and practices of English
for Specific Purposes (ESP). This course aims to familiarize students with the
fundamental concepts and the evolution of ESP as a distinct field within
language teaching. Students will explore the differences between ESP and
General English (GE), the role of ESP teachers and learners, and the
methodologies and processes that guide ESP instruction. By the end of the
course, students will understand the importance of needs analysis, course
design, and the assessment of ESP skills, preparing them to engage with ESP in
academic or professional contexts.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be
able to:
- Define the characteristics and scope of English for Specific
Purposes (ESP).
- Understand the historical development and evolution of ESP as a
specialized field.
- Distinguish between ESP and General English (GE), recognizing the
unique needs of ESP learners.
- Identify and classify the various types of ESP.
- Explore the roles and responsibilities of both ESP teachers and
learners.
- Analyze and apply ESP teaching methodologies and processes.
- Conduct effective needs analyses to inform course design.
- Design ESP courses that cater to specific learner needs.
- Understand and teach ESP skills, including reading, writing,
listening, and speaking.
- Evaluate and assess ESP learners through appropriate testing
methods.
