Course presentation :
The aim of the Universal History of the Biological Sciences course is to provide a general understanding of the history of the biological sciences. It is important to emphasise the role of technical progress in the evolution of biology, from prehistory to the present day. The course focuses on fundamental concepts such as the notion of science, as well as the history of science in Antiquity, and then in religion, from the Middle Ages to the Age of Enlightenment.
Pedagogical objectives of the course :
1. Understand and acquire basic notions about life in prehistoric times ;
2. Find out what made the transition from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages possible. ;
3. A better understanding of the progressive development of science in all its fields ;
4. Learn about the early scientists who revolutionised science;

1st year ‘'Natural and Life Sciences’' Licence students

To make this course more understandable for most students, it is important to know the general concepts of palaeontology, phylogeny and ontogeny.
