Annotation

A brief summary and evaluation of a source, often used in an annotated bibliography to assess its relevance to the literature review.

Conceptual Framework

A structure of concepts or theories derived from the literature review to guide the research study.


Critical Analysis

The process of evaluating sources in a literature review for strengths, weaknesses, and relevance, rather than just summarising.

Gap in Literature

An area of knowledge unexplored or underexplored, identified in the literature review to justify the research problem.

Literature Review

A systematic survey and synthesis of existing research on a topic to establish context, identify gaps, and support the study’s purpose.

Peer-Reviewed Source

A publication evaluated by experts in the field, often prioritized in a literature review for credibility.


Primary Source

Original research or data (e.g., studies, experiments) directly consulted in a literature review.

Research Synthesis

The process of integrating findings from multiple sources in a literature review to draw conclusions or identify patterns.

Scope of Review

The boundaries or focus of the literature review (e.g., time period, disciplines) to keep it manageable.
